Munky King – Omi: A New Approach

Omi-Teaser-002-2

Munky King’s new Omi project takes the familiar – the blind-box mini figure and turns it on its head in a few key ways.  While platforms are great artist ‘canvases’, they also tend to look very much alike – a head, body, two arms and two legs.   Instead of staying inside the box with a generic ‘figure’, MK’s first original design draws inspiration from  Asian opera masks.

Mini figures are also difficult to display in large numbers without looking cluttered or busy.  Adding new minis to a case often involves feats of manual dexterity to avoid playing dominoes.  Omi looks to change things up with an integrated display system that puts the collector back in charge.  Instead of clutter, the result is a clean, streamlined display befitting art. From the shape to the display system, Omi blurs the line between toys and art.

Omi Series 1 will debut later this summer with a strong lineup: Luke Chueh, Yoskay Yamamoto, Buff Monster, Nathan Jurevicius, Ferg, Dave PresslerCraola, and Frank Kozik.  For SDCC, Munky King will give collecotr’s a chance to play with Omi by releasing DIY editions. And yes, there will be a special SDCC exclusive Omi
