Munky King – Omi: A New Approach
Munky King’s new Omi project takes the familiar – the blind-box mini figure and turns it on its head in a few key ways. While platforms are great artist ‘canvases’, they also tend to look very much alike – a head, body, two arms and two legs. Instead of staying inside the box with a generic ‘figure’, MK’s first original design draws inspiration from Asian opera masks.
Mini figures are also difficult to display in large numbers without looking cluttered or busy. Adding new minis to a case often involves feats of manual dexterity to avoid playing dominoes. Omi looks to change things up with an integrated display system that puts the collector back in charge. Instead of clutter, the result is a clean, streamlined display befitting art. From the shape to the display system, Omi blurs the line between toys and art.
Omi Series 1 will debut later this summer with a strong lineup: Luke Chueh, Yoskay Yamamoto, Buff Monster, Nathan Jurevicius, Ferg, Dave Pressler, Craola, and Frank Kozik. For SDCC, Munky King will give collecotr’s a chance to play with Omi by releasing DIY editions. And yes, there will be a special SDCC exclusive Omi.
Check back next week for the Series 1 reveal plus full info on all of Omi’s secrets.
Chauskoskis for the Press Start! Show
A little late on this, but this was just to amazing not to show off. Walter Jacott aka Chauskoskis was invited to take part of the Press Start! show at the Headquarters Gallery in Montreal. This show paid homage to old school and classic videogames. His piece was based on the game “China Gate” and it was the hideous creatures that caught his eye. The game wasn’t huge, so it was tough for Walter to find any decent pics of the characters. His only source available was youtube, where he had to work with screen shots of a very pixilated Mini Bosses from the game. 4 Days later and not to mention made from scratch, Walter showcases his amazing talent by finishing a very awesome submission. Take the time to look at the details of this one-off after the jump. This custom is available right now HERE and I just want to say congrats to whomever pics this up.
