David Choe – Munko @ SDCC

57_DSC_3415_thumb_001

We first brought you pics of David Choe’s Munko figure back in April (proto shown above) during his recent LA solo show.  The blind-box mini series featuring his signature whale  character will debut at Giant Robot’s SDCC booth (#1729).  Munko has graced countless walls, paintings, and even the “banks” of the LA River.   There are twelve designs in all (display case = full set)  with 3 different sculpts – one with legs, one without, and a girl Munko with a bow.   David will be signing at the GR booth on Thursday and Friday from 12-2 in support of both the Munko release and his new self-titled art book.

The photos after the jump are from David Choe’s blog and are not work safe. They are quintessential Choe featuring his whale and a very naked porn star.  So far these are the best pictures on the ‘net featuring the nicely textured paints jobs as well as the best look at the female Munko.  That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.

Giant Robot – Big Boss Robot

grdistroadsmall

First seen in proto form back at the 2nd Giant Robot Biennale back in October, Giant Robot’s Big Boss Robot blind-box minis from Good Smile are set to debut in their SDCC booth (#1729).   Featuring their official mascot, Giant Robot’s first original figure features several points of articulations and removable limbs for mix+match fun.  There are a dozen designs in all – eleven solid colors + the camouflage edition.  To make things simple for collectors, a display box of 12 features the entire set.   If you buy a full set at SDCC, you’ll also receive a bonus limited-edition printed gift bag.  Be sure to watch the promo video featuring stop-motion sequences created by GR co-founder Eric Nakamura.

Kidrobot @ SDCC – Huck Gee, Ron English, Shawnimals & More

Kidrobot has unveiled their SDCC plans with releases/signings planned for each of the five days (Wednesday – Sunday). The varied schedule features a dose of collector favorites (Huck Gee, Ron English, Sket One, and Shawnimals) as well as plenty of pop culture (Simpsons and Yo Gabba Gabba).  In addition to toys, Paul Budnitz will be on-hand to sign pre-release copies of the new I am Plastic Too book.  Here’s a few thoughts on the releases that caught our eye followed by a full rundown.

In our opinion the headline release  is the mystery SDCC exclusive toy drop (Saturday) from Huck Gee which by the silhouette looks like a Skullhead ?Dunny? with the full bones sculpt as opposed to the OG design.

Following the apparent skull theme (hey work with us, here) there’s  Ron English’s KR exclusive Figment bust on Thursday (20 pcs, $200).  Based on Ron’s original series of paintings featuring the skull of Andy Warhol.  In response to Warhol’s expressed desire for a blank tombstone, English feels an inscription of  “Figment” would be an apt send off.

Preview night (hey we’re going backwards…) brings the pre-release of the new Shawnimals Ninjatown minis (very nice) and what looks to be a 3” “Super Special Dunny” pre-release which appears to be a Sketchup design from Sket One, whether it’s the OG from the upcoming Dunny 2010 (August) or a special edition is unknown.  The pre-release label makes us think that this design will be featured in the blind-box series.

6” Lard Lad (Simpsons) Pre-release (150 available, $45)

Chapter One: The Confrontation – Rohby vs. Phuek (7.30)

323

Rohby and PhuEk are both at the tops of their game, creating excellent mechanized toy customs.  In their quest for domination, both artists are busy creating an army of customs which will be pitted head to head in their upcoming joint show,  Chapter One: The Confrontation – Rohby vs. Phuek, opening on July 30th @ myplasticheartnyc.

As seen on his two blogs, PhuEk is hard at work creating his fearsome minions.  He’s enlisted Munnys which he has begun to transform (check out the tubing and added details).  Since soliders alone are not sufficient, he’s also building custom treaded vehicles from cardboard. Check out his war preparation efforts after the jump.
