The Beast Brothers – Los Hermanos Calavera Rojo

BeastBrothersRojo

The Beast Brothers (Carlos and Ernesto East) have been hard at work creating a follow-up to their Los Hermanos Calavera Morado custom Munnys which sold out in 34 minutes back in July.   Limited to 10 pieces once again, their new Los Hermanos Calavera Rojo is ready to ride with flair.

These new hand-painted figures cut a sharp image from the nicely painted skulls right on through to the extra-touch details including a custom sculpted sombrero with silk rope and velvet accents as well as gold chain accents on the characters’ outfit.  Each one is numbered on the back and comes in a laser-etched hand-crafted and stained pine wood box, lined with silk.  First class baby.

Los Hermanos Calavera Morado will drop this Thursday, November 26th @ Noon EDT on eBay for $555 each from BaronessLoves.

Alex Pardee – Pink Flocked Walrus Rider + Xmas Party

Look who’s come in from the cold just in time for the holiday festivities.  Alex Pardee’s Pink Flocked Walrus rider (11”)  is the third edition  of the original figure produced by The Loyal Subjects in conjunction with the tenth anniversary of Upper Playground.  Not that we like picking favorites (actually… we do), but this is in our opinion the best colorway yet – dig the crisp arctic feel of the walrus. As with the other Walrus Riders, this one features bendy arms and a removable tusk which fits nicely into the rider’s hand.   Limited to just 100 pieces, the Pink Flocked Walrus Rider will drop  on Black Friday (11.27) for $114 only from theloyalsubjects.com

To celebrate the drop and the joy of the season, The Loyal Subjects have put together a happenin’ Christmas Party and signing with Alex Pardee  on Saturday December 5th at Goodfellas restaurant on Melrose.  Hosted by Goodfellas, the evening will feature pink flocked Christmas Trees, tunes from DJ Counterstryke,  surprises, and of course killer Hors D’oeuvres from the amazing Goodfellas chefs.  Arrive early, as TLS expects to easily reach the 350 capacity.  Hit the jump for more pics + Alex Pardee’s Walrus Rider poem.

Silent Stage x VISEOne – Winter Edition Sad Dragon Exclusives

IMG_9861

Double trouble from Silent Stage: two Winter Edition Sad Dragon exclusive resins created by VISEOne.  Sad Dragon is a homage to Elliot the dragon from the classic Disney film, Pete’s Dragon.  Limited to 10 pieces each, there’s the classic solid white and a clever ‘disappearing’ edition featuring a white body that ‘fades’ into a clear head for a unique look.    The disappearing edition is a nod to Elliot’s ability to turn himself invisible.

Both Winter Edition Sad Dragons will be available on this Friday (11.27) from the  ‘Sculptures’ section of the Silent Stage online store.  The 8” resin dragons will be available for a very reasonable $59.99.

Seen: Flopdoodle x Switcheroo Holiday Party

 54-DSC_3183

After a busy Saturday (11.21) spent roaming the aisles of DesignerCon, collectors, artists and well regular people headed over to the Holiday Party at the Switcheroo workshop.  The event was half art show, half party.

In terms of art, the show featured  work from Tim Biskup, Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura.  In addition to Biskup x Visell collaborative wood HelperCentaurEphunt (ed of 25) and Tim’s Big Pink Voodoo Pollards,  there were a few new customs and original paintings and drawings from both Tim and Amanda.  Eager to put the others in their place, Michelle offered a brand new collection of ceramic pieces including vases decorated with curious and whimsical faces.  All three artists opened up their considerable archives for holiday shoppers with some good deals to be had.

Did we say party ?  Definitely.  Mix in a mini-keg of Craftsmen 1903, a heap of banh mi sandwiches, an accordion player, and a creme de la creme toy crowd and you get… a pretty mellow evening ;-)  We were surprised by the doodling on tissue boxes – but hey by any means necessary right ?  The night ended with some ‘vandalism’ courtesy of Dril One’s tagging of a paper towel roll in the restroom.  Clever ‘phunt’.  Enjoy the pics – plenty of recognizable faces in the crowd.  Btw, Amanda Visell will be offering some web exclusive items shortly – keep watching her blog.

Gino Joukar’s Toy Art Gallery (TAG)

1-DSC_0647

A little over a month ago Vinyl Pulse posted the first look at the new Toy Art Gallery (TAG) dreamed up, created, and owned by  mega collector Gino Joukar.  Now that TAG is officially open (by appointment only) we’re back to reveal the vinyl treasure that lies just beyond the front door.

It’s true of paintings and it goes for art toys as well – there’s no substitute for face to face viewing.  The Toy Art Gallery delivers an experience like no other space that we are aware of – Eastern, Western, Production, Custom, with a sprinkling of Bronze sculpture all tightly yet cleanly packed into what is an homage to the art of toys.

The first thing you notice upon entering is the large custom pyramid-like shelving unit in the middle of the room covered with all manner of Kaiju.  Dubbed the ‘Kaiju Isand’, the display features both production and one-of-a-kind pieces from such hallmark names as Mark Nagata and Carlos Enrique Gonzales.

The walls surrounding Kaiju island are teeming with a staggering collection of vinyl art toys that is impressive not only for its sheer numbers but also its wide variety – Mark Ryden, Kaws, Joe Ledbetter, Amanda Visell, Huck GeeDavid Horvath, and Michael Lau are just a few of the artists represented.  The collection is organized by artist often next to an original painting, drawing or in some case art print.  This allows one to appreciate the varied output of an individual artist while also placing it in the larger context of the art toy movement.
