Q: What’s the concept behind Blooming Death?
Blooming death symbolizes the journey in my personal and professional life over the last year and a half. I’ve come to realize that beauty and tragedy can exist simultaneously in our lives.
Q: Can you tell us about the process in creating Blooming Death?
This was an ambitious project. Each toy was 100% made by me. Every pot was hand turned on a lathe. Every petal was cut out on a band saw and every piece has been hand painted. Each one is a handcrafted piece of art.
Q: Why wood?
Wood - if it is the right wood, is environmentally friendly and sustainable, it is also extremely durable and long lasting. I also enjoy the process of physically cutting and shaping each piece.
Q: How does the project relate to your paintings and past custom art toys?
I’m trying to bridge the gap between what my paintings are and what both my production and custom toys have been. My dimensional work now transcends the label of an art toy into an actual toy sculpture.
Q: What’s up next ?
I’ve been setting up a shop over the last year and have a number of wood based projects in various stages of development.
