Beambot - From Logo to Toy
Got an interesting email from Beam about their upcoming Beambot figure. Who's Beam you might ask ? Beam specializes in a particular advertising medium they call 'beaming' -- basically projecting bright promotional images on large flat surfaces such as skyscrapers. Beambot started as Beam's mascot hence the large beamer on his left arm.
Starting with the logo image, Beam then created a 3d model of the character which was then output as a rapid-prototype model. From that point the proto was sent to Japan to a company responsible for turning it into a fully-articulated figure. What you see here is a nearly complete production proto though it does not have the final graphics yet.
This is probably one of the most elaborate corporate mascot turned toy projects we've ever seen. While Beambot has an unusual origin and creation path, the figure does fit into the growing yet still small sub-genre of futuristic designer toys. Beambot is available for preorder now with special pre-launch promotional pricing.
