Seen: Crazy for Cult 2

This past weekend was packed with LA art shows.  We’ve recovered and will throw down our coverage in the next few hours.  First up is Crazy for Cult 2 which opened this past Friday (8.22.08) @ Gallery 1988 on Melrose.  The turnout for the show was extremely impressive – the line to get into the gallery wrapped around the blck and was steady throughout the night.  That people would be willing to wait in line for an opportunity to check out the art is personally pretty remarkable.

As we mentioned in our preview for the show, this year’s installment of the art homage to cult films was quite impressive.  While one might expect the quality of art to dip for such a large group show – this was not the case.   In addition to several excellent pieces, the overall quality of submissions was strong.  Props to Gallery 1988 for its strong curation of the show.

Trends come and go, but this year was the year of the Wizard of Oz.  Unexpectedly, the classic movie dominated the event.  While we enjoyed Dorothy’s adventures, we’re partial to the riotously funny  Monty Python and the  Holy Grail.  So not surprisingly our pick for the show is Luke Chueh’s sweet piece featuring the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog and a jewel encrusted grail (seen above).  Be sure to check out the gallery’s complete listing of pieces.  Find and (maybe) buy your personal favorite.

Gallery 1988 will try to top this year’s installment with Crazy 4 Cult 3D next year featuring Weird Al Yankovic (cult music star extraordinaire).  If you missed this year’s show and are thinking about checking it out… go for it.  You have until the close on September 12th.    After the jump – a gallery loaded with pics from the opening.
