Keith Poon's Hammerhead Shark

IMG_2913

There's a new fish (well.. shark) in the water.  Building on the success of his Sharky vinyl, Keith Poon has created a bigger brother -- a hammerhead shark.  This as yet unnamed hammerhead vinyl sculpted by NEMO is bigger (taller and wider) and meaner (check out the crooked hook + knife) than his little bro.

While Sharky's got some bite he's also sleek and streamlined.  In contrast, Hammerhead  is a hulking beast - open intimidation seems to be his game.   From a design perspective, ol 'hammy's got a lot more front-facing surface area for artwork from his noggin to his larger 'belly area' due to his almost closed mouth.  The first production hammerhead is expected to swim into stores late this year.  After the jump - a full hammerhead shark photo gallery.

Proto Monday >> Quixote by Angels and Gringos

Quixote_Artistic

Today on Proto Monday we’re  pleased to unveil the final sculpt for Quixote, the newest figure from Daniel and Johnny Monahan’s Angels and Gringos.  Designed and sculpted by Daniel Monahan, Quxiote is the continuation of Angels and Gringos' re-interpretation of Cervantes’ classic story which began with the release of Sancho

Daniel’s meticulous sculpt utilizes “simple shapes” to portray “complex emotions”.  Reality is often in the eye of the beholder.  It’s often a matter of a point of view. Angel and Gringos’ Quixote is at once seemingly innocuous (as seen above) yet  dangerously cunning  seen from a top-down angle.  Over several iterations, Daniel has worked to ensure that both Sancho and Quixote inhabit the same visual universe – note the similarities in the limbs and the prominent use of angles.  However, Quixote is clearly and rightfully not Sancho – the large  irregularly shaped eye sockets and sunken temples present him as a troubling and troubled soul.

With Quixote, Angels and Gringos continue to challenge the relatively narrow range of aesthetics seen in vinyl art toys.. Daniel’s skill as a sculptor and ability to think directly in 3D imbues Quixote with a complexity and subtlety rarely found in the vinyl market.    This is sculpture realized as  vinyl  figure.  By refusing to occupy either the rainbow-hued cult of cute or the shadows of edgy, Quixote challenges viewers and collectors.

The completed Quixote sculpt will be on display throughout SDCC (7.23 – 7.27) in the DKE Toys booth.  The final figure will stand roughly 9” tall, ship with accessories (not shown) and drop in late ‘08 or early ‘09.  One to watch.  After the jump – a more revealing look.

DGPH's Audot & Kibot from BIC Plastics

P1080477

BIC Plastics recently posted a teaser rendering of a 'mystery' robot to their site (shown below).  It turns out that the pic is of DGPH's  upcoming Audot (+Kibot)  figure(s) part of the BIC Tomorrow series.  As you can see in the unpainted proto shot above, there's a robot within a robot -- the smaller one is Kibot.  Apparently, the arms and legs are interchangeable (?).

Nice design -- dig the hands alot. Very curious about the 'bot within a 'bot feature. More as we get it.   We're digging the new-found focus on robots in the vinyl scene -- how many bears or other furry animals do we really need ;-)
