Yesterday we had the pleasure of dropping by Amanda Visell and Michelle Valigura’s studio. Amanda’s breathing a little easier now that she just wrapped up work for her Tic Toc Apocalypse solo opening this Saturday (6.21) @ M Modern in Palm Springs. Having seen the pieces first hand, mass destruction has reached a new pinnacle of charm, humor and visual appeal.
In case you’re curious Amanda’s trail of deadly monsters is marked by a large number of paintings including some of her largest pieces yet on canvas. She also has four finished ink drawings (not sketches). And of course, original wood sculptures – five to be exact.
Since a studio visit without a post is like cereal without milk, we’re happy to bring you a preview of two of her wood sculptures – first there’s the towering two-headed ice-giant (above) from her Ice Army painting. The fearsome two-some has a compelling and unusual way of ‘recruiting’ their ice army. This is likely her most complex and largest sculpture so far. And our favorite of her wood pieces – the Jackalope, which apparently loves tormenting robots. See the agony after the jump. Enjoy.
