Ode to Edo – Legacy of the Samurai (6.19.08)
Driven by numerous cult and mainstream movies, anime, manga and comic treatments, Samurai are unquestionably a part of pop culture. The feudal warriors of Japan have taken on a nearly mythic status as an unstoppable combination of training, discipline, and the now-legendary Samurai Sword. In the process, our popular conceptions of the samurai have become more and more separated from their original context.
Ode to Edo (flier) presented by the Jerome Jenner Gallery honors the traditions and spirit of these feudal warriors through contemporary eyes and brushes. The show features 14 authentic sets of samurai armor as well as original paintings from 21 contemporary artists. Included in the group, are two LA painters – Tessar Lo (above) and Yoskay Yamamoto (below). The show opens on Thursday, June 19th @ SMASH Gallery in Toronto, Canada and continues through June 30th.
