Doktor A - Welcome to the Retropolis
Doktor A will wow fans and collectors alike with his Welcome to the Retropolis solo show opening on Saturday, June 7th (7 - 10 PM) @ Rivet Gallery. The show will serve as an introduction to the Mechtorians universe, the basis of his upcoming mini-fig line of the same name from MINDstyle. The bulk of the work will be original paintings though there will also be two original sculptures and six customs plus a limited-edition print. While Dok is certainly known for his amazing customs, we're excited to see more paintings from him. So if you're in Cleveland, or nearby -- go check it out for yourself. Metalocalypse Figures from Shocker Toys
Shocker Toys will drop brand-new 5.5" figures from Adult Swim's hit Metalocalypse series this summer. For SDCC '08, there's an exclusive set featuring each member of the Dethklok band -- Nathan Explosion, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, Toki Wartooth, Pickles and William Murderface + a secret mystery figure -- 6 in all. KISS Be@rbricks
KISS, the infamously popular rock band, will be featured on Be@rbricks from Medicom due to drop in October. More than just a band, KISS turned their concerts into a striking visual performance with their customs complete with their over-the-top black and white face-paint. The KISS figures will be released under the I W@S MADE FOR LOVIN’ YOU title named after their hit single of the same name (minus the '@' of course). Each member of the original band lineup will have a Be@rbrick based on their character -- The Demon (Gene Simmons), Starchild (Paul Stanley), Space Ace (Ace Frehley), and The Catman (Peter Criss). Veggiesomething's House of Liu Minis + TTF Exclusives
Fresh on the heels of the official news on Veggiesomething's new House of Liu Shaolin Monk figures comes nice pics of the upcoming 3" Baby House of Liu Figures - Mei Mei and Di Di (first seen on Proto Monday) from Crazy Label. The two Baby figures will also be released together in a special TTF '08 exclusive set (above) featuring orange accents rather than red (limited to 50 sets). Amanda Visell's 20" "Gnome Eating Bat" Munny
Amanda Visell's custom 20" Gnome Eating Bat Munny (Kidrobot) features one happy (and full) bat and a sad (eaten) Gnome. it shows off her construction skills as well as her painting talent. This custom seems to bring Amanda's Gnome vs. Ants painting to life. This excellent piece will be auctioned by the celebrated Christie's auction house (New York) in June (details to come).
The fairly recent trend of placing designer toys (production and custom) in high-end art auctions seems to be growing and certainly worth watching. Will auctions serve as one way of establishing these toys as art objects within the larger art community ? We'll see.
