Seen: MG-2 Release @ Munky King Melrose

The release party and art show for Marka27’s MG-2 Mexico went down last night (4.3.08) at Munky King on Melrose.  By the time the doors opened shortly after seven, a good sized crowd streamed in through the doors — many eager to buy the brand-new second figure in the minigods line.  The red, white and green MG2 Mexico stands at an impressive 17" tall and probably eclipses the first MG1 Brazil in terms of design.

In addition to the toy release, the event also featured an impressive art show.  Marka and guest artist Jesse Hernandez spent over a month prepping original art and new prints for the event.  The wide variety included original paintings on wood, embellished prints, custom toys and giclees.  While some art lined the long main hallway, most of the art and action was in the back gallery area.  Unlike many similar events, the vibe was very relaxed thanks in part to a circular couch for the two artists instead of the normal signing table. Fans were able to gather around Jesse and Marka rather than waiting single-file in a long line.  A small detail, but it really made a big difference in setting a chill mood.

Not content to have just a very good show, Marka went the extra mile, finishing two paintings on burlap and a mono mg camo mg-1 Brazil custom over the past weekend.  His custom and Jesse’s custom MG-1 looked great side by side in a large acrylic case against the back wall.

Part of the draw of these events is the opportunity to get a sketch and a signature — both Marka and Jesse spent most of the night sketching in books and drawing on various blank figures.  Each took their time to make sure collectors went home with something special.

While many of the embellished prints sold, Munky King still has several available art pieces and custom toys.  Give them a call or drop a line if you’re interested.  They should also have some additional MG-2 Mexico figures in stock.  The show should be up through at least the end of April, so go check it out if you missed it.  Definitely worth the trip.  Props to Marka, Jesse and Munky King on a great debut for the MG-2 Mexico — go get it!
