Seen: Audrey Kawasaki – Mayoi Michi

If there was even the slightest doubt that Audrey Kawasaki is one of the hottest LA artists, the opening of her Mayoi Michi solo this past Saturday night (2.9.08) @ Copro Nason put that to rest.  Audrey’s new original works on canvas and wood drew a diverse crowd which packed the main gallery room for most of the night — patrons moved along the walls and waited to view each piece.   Her new original works sold out via preview.  Her retrospective offering of prints from her own collection sold out as well.  The excellent show exclusive Lacey print moved quickly and may have sold out as well.

Personally, I enjoyed the new large canvas pieces.  Working on wood is a signature element of Audrey’s work and arguably her style.  Recently she’s started to work on canvas.  The lack of the familiar light wood grain background, allows a fresh look at her delicate characters.  Having said that, her new pieces on wood are probably some of the best so far.

While Audrey has been in high-demand for quite awhile within the pop surrealist scene (for lack of a better term) in LA, it does  seem that the larger art community is taking notice.  Click through to see more pics from the opening.  If you’re in SoCal go check it out for yourself — the show runs through March 1st.
