Carrie Chau – Black Sheep Exhibition + Figures

While surfing through my handy-dandy RSS reader, I came across a post on the Artoyz blog about HK artist Carrie Chau’s recent Black Sheep exhibition at Time Square in Cowloon Bay Causeway Bay (HK).  The pics of her Black Sheep figure (polystone or ceramic ?) really caught my attention and sent me to dig around for more pics and info.  I hit pay dirt with Peter Ng’s blog post about the show and his sweet flickr set (thanks for the pics Peter).

While I was drawn by the figures, the pics of the actual stable-like exhibition setup anchored by a huge 2.5 meter Black Sheep sculpture are pretty amazing.  The exhibition featured original paintings as well as numerous products offered by  Homeless Concept

I’m pretty darn impressed with the Black Sheep figures — the design meshes a cute almost cartoony character with a very strong sense of elegant refinement.  The detail on the body is pretty amazing.  The  figure  was apparently available in 2 sizes – 4.5 inches (200 pieces) and a deluxe  12-inch version (250 pieces).   According to Artoyz the 12-inch version is sold out.   Looks like the smaller version is up for auction on  eBay.  While this project doesn’t fit neatly into the designer vinyl mold (both in terms of artist and material) it certainly shares much of the same spirit in terms of limited-edition 3D popular art collectibles.  While we just learned about Carrie Chau, we’re definitely fans.
