Seen: Sam Flores - Kid n' Play (5.12.07)

Sam Flores let out his inner child for the opening of his Kid N' Play show at Lab 101 on Saturday (5.12.07).  The show presented art that would be equally suitable in a child's room as  in an art collection. The opening was set earlier in the day, which as intended encouraged people to bring their children out for the show. A large wall size installation combined mural painting with several painted wood pieces of familiar characters including Fatima.  Two bedroom installations featuring hand-painted head boards, and painted furniture showcased the possibilites for artful living spaces of cool kids, young and old.   Apparently, Sam has created a line of bed sheets which was delayed by unforseen production issues.  In keeping with the theme of the show, the new paintings combine Sam's characters with softer and more colorful backgrounds and settings than he typically uses.  The towering highlight of the show was a huge Fatima sculpture which doubles as a bed -- the portal like entrance is embedded in her dress.  To be the kid on the block, to have the ultimate bed...

You seen one, you seen it all. It seems art just stops trying.
