Seen: Kidrobot LA Reopening (11.09.06)

Kidrobot LA reopened last Thursday night (11.09.06) in its brand new location on Melrose Ave.  In addition to the opportunity to see the new store for the first time, the new limited-edition Kidrobot hoodies drew a large crowd which wrapped around the corner for most of the night. Paul Budnitz and Maze, chief KR apparel designer, were on hand to help kick off the opening of the new store.  The line was pretty chill and orderly with security spending most of their attention towards keeping folks safe as they stood out in the street oggling the Volkswagen GTI decked out in a Dunny pattern.  Once inside, people eagerly purchased Hoodies and some proudly wore them out the door.

The new Kidrobot LA store itself is roughly the same size as the previous Santa Monica location but has a definitely upscale design.  One side of the store is dedicated to clothing and shoes while the other side features larger vinyl figures and the usual blind-box assortment.  Rather than the high-ceiling of the previous location, the new Melrose location has a comparatively low sloped ceiling decorated with the bright rainbow pattern featured on one of the new hoodies.  While this change lends a more polished boutique look to the place it also means there is no wall space for art which in turn likely means the end of art shows at KR LA.

Back to the car…  The product of a special collaboration between Kidrobot and Volkswagen, the black GTI features a white outline dunny pattern on the entire exterior of the car which continues inside on both the door panels and the seats.  The interior dashboard lights have been refitted with green glowing backlights plush a downward facing set mounted underneath the front of the vehicle.  For those of you that want to Dunny around town, you may be in luck.  It sounds like Volkswagen is considering producing the vehicle as a special limited edition car.

All in all, the reopening of KR LA went smoothly thanks to the joint efforts of the excellent veteran LA staff as well as many of the KR NY HQ staff including Chad, Nichole (Toy Baroness),  Merryl, Maze and of course Paul B.  Next up for KR LA – Release party and signing for Thomas Han’s Painkiller Dunny (11.16.06). 1. Consider the shark officially jumped.
And my God, those hoodies are some of the most hideous, clownlike apparel I’ve ever seen.

  2. Good thing I didn’t go to the KR opening, I was at Meltdown for the Rust in Piece event. Money Mark performing, VIPs left and right. KR should of planned a better event. Meltdown wins. By the way, those are some gay ass hoodies, I guess that’s what happens when you move to WH.

  3. Why can’t the hoodies just simply be “ugly”? “So gay!” What’s up with the homophobia? Is someone insecure with their own sexuality?
