Seen: Jeff Soto – Cold Ice Age (11.18.06)

Jeff Soto’s Cold Ice Age solo show opened this past Saturday (11.18.06) at BLK/MRKT in the Culver City Gallery District.  The show featured mostly large and medium sized pieces featuring signature Soto themes including anacrhonistic robots and the synergy of nature and machines.  While the themes were familiar, the variety of the pieces both in content and mood (somber to bright and optimisic was welcome and refreshing.  One staple element of lowbrow or is that postbrow (?!?) is the incorporation of everyday cultural elements into artwork.  While there are numerous examples of this in Soto’s paintings, the use of the Veritech fighter is hands down my favorite.  Any one who spent time glued to the tv watching Robotech can certainly smile at this work.  Cold Ice Age which runs through December 16th, 2006 clealry demonstrates why Jeff Soto’s popularity and stature as an artist continues to grow.
