Closing Reception/Signing for Baseman’s “For the Love of Toby” Show

Francine and I went up to Billy Shire Fine Arts yesterday for the closing reception and signing for Gary Baseman’s "For the Love of Toby" art show.   The gallery  had lots of interesting Baseman merchandise available for sale including the Baseman book, posters (both from the Toby show and a previous show at La Luz De Jesus), cards (including Christmas cards with Santa spanking a Baseman character), and last but not least Dumb Luck Japan Edition toys (stock of these seems to keep showing up from time to time).   When we arrived there was already a line of about 15 people waiting to get their various posters, show catalogs, DL’s, and even blank toys.  The wait wasn’t too bad although Gary was friendly as ever and took his time to chat and sign whatever people brought with them.   While we were waiting, a life-size Toby peered around a corner and then started to interact with the crowd!  Later on it was funny to watch Toby looking at the art and wincing at pictures depicting himself in rather awkward situations. Somewhat sheepishly, we brought out our collection of 5 dunces and the 2 Baseman Neo Kaiju figures for signing.  Gary happily signed them and we chatted briefly about upcoming toys such as the large Baseman dunces, which WILL be available for sale at the San Diego Comic-Con.  Also, I’m happy to report that it appeared that over 90% of the show pieces have sold.  We had a great time as I’m sure did all the other Baseman fans who showed up.
