10,000!

We have a winner… I just sent off congratulatory email to our 10,000th visitor who came to us from Taiwan!  Once he/she replies, I’ll post the winner’s name 🙂  Thanks again to everyone for reading and supporting Vinyl Pulse.

Update:
There was some confusion about this giveway.  Looks like people posted comments to 2 posts — the main post about being close to 10k and the original post announcing the contest.  The winner posted a comment to the original announcement as "Richard".  I haven’t heard back from him, but that’s probably because it’s now the wee hours in the morning in Taiwan.

Also, the counter was most likely not "stuck".  The counter displays the total number of visits rather than page loads.  Visits are basically defined as page loads from a given IP address that occur within 30 minutes of each other. So reloading a page will not cause the counter to increment.    Of course, reloading may seem to increment the counter but in reality you’re seeing the result of visits from other folks.

  1. I thought you had to post a comment to say you were the 10,000th. Wasn’t that the rules? :/
Ah well nevermind, congrats to whoever the mystery person is!

  2. Yeah, the contest was a great big ball of confusion, but congrats!
The rules did say to post a reply to “this post” which I believe most people did (though maybe not richard). Whatever. VP had the right intentions and a good idea, anyway.

  3. Here’s the post that most people posted to, per the instructions:
“Giveaway: 10,000th Vistitor sometime in the next day or so
Ooh! We have about 100 visitors to go before we reach 10,000. We’re giving away a signed regular edition Dae Dae dunny signed by Sket-One to the 10,000th visitor — so if you visit vinyl pulse and the sitemeter counter (bottom of the sidebar on the right side) shows a number close to 10,000 (say plus/minus 10) then please leave a comment to THIS post with a valid email address. We’ll check the logs, determine the actual 10,000th visitor and email him/her. Thanks for all your continued support!”
It says ” then please leave a comment to THIS post with a valid email address” and that was not a hyperlink to anything – so the instructions were clear. That’s why there were all the hits to that post.

  4. And the reference to “this post” was NOT the original announcement that Richard apparently posted to. So the prize has been awarded to the wrong person, apparently, at least to someone who did not follow the rules. OK, I will leave it now. Just that “rules are rules”. Maybe I am missing something.

  5. One more: The revised rules that were posted for the contest said: “Here’s how we’re going to handle this: If you load the page and the counter shows a visitor count of within +/- 10 of 10,000 (9,990 to 10,010) then go ahead and post a comment on the most recent post on the blog and be SURE to fill in your correct email address on the comment form.”
I don’t see how the “original announcement” of the contest could be confused with “the most recent post on the blog” – that could only be the announcement later on that they were within 100 of the 10,000 for the contest, and that is the message that says leave a comment to THIS post – so there has been a screw-up I would say.
Leave it to an attorney to read the fine print – sorry.

  6. The whole point was to try and find out the identity of the 10,000th visitor. It was made clear that number 10,000 would be identified by using the IP address from the logs. The counter is just a way to give us an idea when it was near 10,000. The request to post a comment with email address was just a way to figure out to whom the IP address belonged. As far as I was concerned the only “rule” was to be the 10,000th visitor. The rest of it was a way to try and figure out who belonged to the winning IP address.
